Research interests

  • Distribution and ecology of marine microzooplankton
  • Horizontal and vertical distribution of microzooplankton in various oceanic areas (Southern Ocean, Southwestern and tropical Atlantic, north Pacific, Arctic Ocean). Relationships with water-masses. Biogeographic patterns, expatriation, seasonal cycles, trophic relationships, abundance and biomass. Vertical flux and sedimentation rates of fossilizable microzooplankton on the basis of sediment trap materials (easter tropical Atlantic); plankton-sediment traps-surface sediments similarities in species assemblages. Paleoclimatic interpretations of the fossil record. Holocene - latest Pleistocene pelagic paleoecology on the basis of species-specific radiolarian (polycystine) assemblages. The groups most intensively covered in these studies are polycystine radiolarians and tintinnids; heterotrophic dinoflagellates, naked ciliates, phaeodarians, cysts, silicoflagellates, pteropod molluscs, etc. are also covered in ecologically oriented surveys.

  • Ecology of invasive Asiatic bivalve molluscs (Corbicula fluminea, Limnoperna fortunei) in the Río de La Plata river and lower delta of the Paraná river
  • Abundance, feeding, reproduction and recruitment, survival, dispersion, and usefulness as a biological monitor of pollution by heavy metals and organic pesticides of invasive freshwater molluscs. Monthly samplings at several locations in the lower delta of the Paraná river and in the upper reaches of the Río de La Plata estuary are used for the assessment of growth patterns and recruitment, bioaccumulation of contaminants, fertility, etc. In addition, in situ growth of caged individuals at all locations is used as evidence of ambient fitness and potential effects of toxic materials on the biology of the mollusc. Control measures to curb growth of L. fortunei in industrial installations (D. Boltovskoy, D. Cataldo y N. Correa, M. Matsubara).
